Travel safety is an issue that many people worry about, below I will give some helpful tips on how to have a relaxing but safe trip aboard.

To start, I would say that every location differs in the exact precautions necessary. Many of the tips would work equally well in the US as well as abroad.

Places to stay and to not stay
For example:
Wyndham Grand Izmir is a good place to stay
Demyanskaya Hotel in Demyansk, Russia was a horrible place to stay

Places to see and not see
For example:
Pompeii is worth the trip
Tromso, Norway is a fantasic place to visit, but the food options were only so so
Velikiy Novgorod is a hidden gem that many Western tourists do not get to
The food in Rome really is amazing.

Packing
European airlines have different carry on and check in rules so packing lighter can
be advantageous. I am getting pretty good at packing light but my wife is an
expert at packing light even when packing for four kids and herself in one small
suitcase

Traveling with young children
Pacing yourself is key, with older children, you may be able to see a lot, but pick
the best places to see and stick to it. Expectations may need to be adjusted

Exchanging currency
It is almost always better to pull money from an ATM, rather than exchanging
currency at a booth. Make sure to ask about foreign transaction fees on your debit
card. If you can, get a card without foreign transaction fees. CapitalOne doesn't
charge such fees, so consider using them. More to come on this topic.
There is often an ATM in the secure area of the airport before you exit. For
instance, the Tel Aviv Airport, there is one near baggage claim.
