Part 2 of my favorite travel memories. During this quarantine/lockdown period, I have been thinking about some of my favorite travel memories (listed in no particular order). I wanted to share a few of them. Please share in the comments your favorite memories from your travels. Also let me know which of my favorites you would like to hear more about. (side note: sorry, I don't have pictures readily available for all of these)
1. Eating 'original' pizza in Naples in October 2017
2. Being on a train that drove straight onto the ferry that went between Germany and Denmark in summer 2005
3. Getting pulled over multiple times in our rental car in eastern Ukraine in 2006 and trying a different method of getting out of bribing the officer each time (the most successful method was to pretend to not speak any Russian (although all three of us in the car did))
4. Flying in and out of Kilimanjaro Airport and seeing the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the 'easy' way, out of the window of the airplane
5. Flying into Khartoum during the day and seeing how destitute the city was, we were not allowed to get off the plane, so we spent the layover in Khartoum on the plane
6. Visiting the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican in February 2016
7. Staying in a renovated barn up a steep, steep road in Switzerland in 1995 and waking to the sound of sheep bells in the morning
8. Staying in the worst hostel in the world in Athens in 2005, there were large cockroaches in the room and it was so hot and humid in the room and the room had no windows (sorry this isn't a good memory)
9. Watching the dolphins (or maybe porpoises) swimming alongside our tour boat in Alaska in August 1999 (and a similar experience in Newport Beach, California in 2018)
10. Finding a slug in our carton of freshly picked strawberries in northern California in 1989-ish
11. Seeing the moonlike landscape of Lanzarote in December 2015
12. Snorkeling in Hanauma Bay Hawaii in March 1996 (and my sister having to rescue my dad from drowning)
13. Wandering the streets of Cesky Krumlov with my new wife at the time in April 2007
14. Eating street tacos in Mexico City in 2010 (they were very, very delicious and there was only about a 25% chance of getting ill ;) )
15. Experiencing the 4th of July fireworks in Mesquite, Nevada in 2018, after not being in the US for the previous three years
16. Experiencing the streets of Toulouse, France and watching the Bastille Day fireworks from my hotel in July 2019
17. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from atop a mountain in Bar Harbor, Maine in 1997
18. Swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas in February 2012
19. Smelling and experiencing the multicolored tulips in Keukenhof, Netherlands in April 2017
20. Seeing Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in February 2019
